The Raiguer region and especially Inca are considered the handicraft leather and shoe making centres of Mallorca. The Raiguer region is a microcosm of 354 square kilometres that boasts the oldest shoemaking guilds of the island. The artisans of Inca, Llucmajor, Alaró and Binissalem developed a handicraft that became a renowned industry.

Inca is without any doubt the centre point of handicraft leather making in Mallorca. The Leather and Graphic Arts Museum sponsored by the Inca Town Hall and the Balearic University is currently in the planning stage. It will display leather handicrafts and will constitute the top cultural and ethnological milestone that Inca and the entire region deserve.

Mallorcan shoe exports, the increase of popularity abroad and the emergence of emblematic brands have contributed to their reputation as quality products. These brands have a deep-rooted history and a handicraft approach, that is, direct human intervention in most of the production process.

Leather handicrafts, both shoes and handbags, undergo more than 200 operations from start to finish of the manufacturing process. Of course, the number of steps could be reduced but then we would betray the handicraft philosophy of the companies and would risk losing customers and the prestige of Mallorcan shoes which are synonymous with a conscientiously made product and unmatchable quality. These 200 manufacturing steps are reflected in great detail: excellent leather, perfect stitching and seams, a smooth, glove-like feel and the guarantee of a unique process in the art of making shoes and leather goods. The continuous circular seam insulates against heat and damp and adapts the insole perfectly to the foot adding great comfort and resistance to the shoe.

Mallorcan shoes and leather goods are present in the most prestigious international fairs of the field. Moreover, many factories located in El Raiguer region –in Inca to be more precise– are open to visitors throughout the week.
